Top NATO General: 'We Don’t Truly Understand Yet What It Is That Russia Is Going To Do In Syria'

Euronews: Nato expresses ‘concern’ over Russia’s role in Syria

As Russian cargo planes touch down in Syria, Nato has expressed concern over Moscow’s role in the country.

According to Russian authorities the two planes which arrived in Latakia on Saturday were carrying 80 tons of humanitarian aid.

Although reports are growing that Russia is stepping up its support of the Syrian regime.

“We don’t truly understand yet what it is that Russia is going to do in Syria,” Philip Breedlove, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander for Europe told a press conference. “We have heard everything from humanitarian operations to combat operations. It remains to be seen what this will be in the end. We do watch it with concern and what we are most concerned about is any operations that will continue to support the Assad regime.”

WNU Editor: NATO's General Breedlove is saying that they are not sure on what Russia is going to do in Syria .... hmmm .... sending in armoured vehicles, combat troops, combat aircraft, anti-aircraft missile systems, building a base .... I say that it is very clear on what Russia is doing.

Russia wants to save their ally Syria (& Iran's). Fair enough. We might despise those authoritarian regimes, but that is the way the game is played.

But IS does not have an air force. So why do the need antiaircraft?
This is more than fighting is and saving Assad. At the very least it is tweaking the U.S.'s nose. If you don't respond they take more.

Putin did nothing, when Obama went into Libya (where we should not have been). But now Putin is pushing back, because Obama is weak or wants the US to be weak.

Obama should be blunt. He could even use his worn out (hurts my ears) phrase "Let me be clear" and say to the Russians "What the hell do you meed anti-aircraft for to defeat IS?"

Maybe the US should pullout and let the Iranians, The Shia militias bleed more. The only one we should be helping is the Kurds.

Putin may not be the bringer of light for all humanity, but anyone with sufficient resources and resolve willing to seriously (!) weaken the IS, is doing s th good - at least in my book.
The US, NATO and its coalition members (including Turkey) have yet to make a credible stand against the IS, or rather start by stopping materiel and political support for the caliphate.

And the much heralded deployment of air-defense systems ... well, the SA-22 Pantsir S1 is a fairly short-range system, meant for close-range defense. It also is most likely able to track and destroy incoming mortar shells as well, as similar modern systems like the latest versions of the german Gepard.
With this in mind, the whole "threat" coming from russian "air-defense" seems a little over-blown. It is not like imposing (no-)fly-zones over a whole country.

Neither has Russia, nor will they. Russia would have to deploy and support a very large expeditionary force to defeat IS.

If some spec Ops guys did not know the Russians were there and the Russians did not know they were there, and they came in by helo, ... bad things could happen.

There is some threat form IS with helos or Migs. They have captured some airfields. They probably cannot keep them up for long. then again Turkey is playing a double game so they could get spare parts and they have impressed, bribed or threatened people with experience in the oil business to keep their wells running so... who knows.

Obama certainly brought this on himslef (& us) by dicking around when it came to defeating ISIS. He is using 2% of the Air Force, not hitting training camps etc. His taking pot shots at ISIS certainly did not resolve anything but ISIS's training schedule. The U.S. is training ISIS.

A whole lot of "concern" flying around in the West. Next thing you know they'll commence the dreaded "carpet hash tagging", that'll teach em.
